University Short description of the participating University Role of the university in the project
Institute of Education, University of London, United Kingdom Institute of Education, The Institute of Education (IOE) has a reputation as the UK’s premier institution for the education and training of teachers and for the conduct of educational and social research. This reputation has been gained and sustained for over 100 years. Over the last one hundred years the Institute has seen a broadening of responsibilities. It is now the largest university centre of education research in the UK and one of the largest UK centres of social science. The Institute has a history of being a leading performer in Education in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in the UK since the RAE’s establishment. In the UK Higher Education Research Yearbook (2007) the IOE was named as the top ranking UK institution for social science research . Bogazici University supported the project that helps the students to be highly skilful with improved thinking, perceiving and problem solving abilities. Bogazici University contributed to the development of the assignments and strategies and participated in the student exchanges. The network of the faculty members in the university made it possible that several secondary schools participated so that the developed teaching could be tested and afterwards revised and adapted. Bogazici University contributed to the production of the videos of young Europeans discussing their perspectives on some of the questions of the European Values Study.
Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey Bogazici University in Istanbul is a research university that was established on what had been the Robert College campus in 1863. Boğaziçi University is a scientific and educational institution dedicated to cultivating self-confident individuals who promote freedom, are innovative, think critically, have a sense of social responsibility, are entrepreneurial, mindful of ethical values, environmentally aware, multi-faceted, creative, unprejudiced, and have a strong grasp of science, the arts, and culture. Tilburg University, The Netherlands The university Mateja Bela contributed to the development of the assignments and strategies related to the Atlas of European Values. The university organised try outs at secondary schools and participated in the student exchanges where the teaching materials were tested on secondary schools.

In this project the department of Sociology of the Tilburg University delivered the data collected in the new European Values Study 2008 wave, a database of high quality Tilburg University was responsible for the interpretation of values with respect to work, family, society and religion in the Netherlands, Germany, UK, Slovakia, and Turkey, and to compare these values with other European countries and in time.
University of Potsdam, Germany The Department of Geography of the University of Potsdam offers training for B.Sc. / M.Sc. and BEd / MEd with the emphasis being on teacher training in terms of number of students. Teacher training at the University of Potsdam offers an unusally strong link into schools as students are required to hold classes supervised by university staff during BA and to spend one term in on-the-job-training during MA studies. Geography Education in particular has an outspoken focus on training teaching methods, differentiation and classroom communication, as well as geographical concepts in education. This also implies a very intense reflection on how geography is taught in other European countries (mainly GB, FR, ES, PT, NL) to see how problems differ or are the same, but solved differently. The section Geographical Education of the Department of Geography has taken part in developing and evaluating assignments and strategies that were designed to help teachers to make use of the Atlas of European Values during their lessons. The section has also taken part in student exchanges, during which teacher students of two of the participating countries planned, carried out and evaluated lessons on European Values. Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Tilburg, The Netherlands Fontys Lerarenopleiding Tilburg (FLOT) is one of the institutes of Fontys University of Applied Sciences, the biggest institution for higher education in the Netherlands with more than 35000 students. The teacher training institute offers bachelor and master studies in geography, social studies, history, economy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, Dutch, German, English, French and Spanish. FLOT offers a competence based programme to their students and therefore cooperates within a network of more than hundred schools for secondary education. Research in learning strategies is one focus of the institute, supervised by several associated professors and explored by phd candidates. As the project leader FLOT was be responsible for the organisation of the whole project, which implies coordinating the cooperation between the participating institutes and organizing the activities on behalf of the whole project. FLOT contributed to the development of the assignments and strategies and participated in the student exchanges. During these exchanges the teaching materials were tested at secondary schools and after evaluation adapted. FLOT contributed to the production of the videos of young Europeans discussing their perspectives on some of the questions of the European Values Study. FLOT is responsible for keeping the website www.atlasofeuropeanvalues.eu up to date.
Univerzita Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici, Slovakia Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica is one of the biggest educational institutions in Slovakia focusing on teacher training in all subjects. The University has more than 60-year experience with education and training of future teachers. The same can be said about the Department of Geography which has a long tradition in geography education too. The Department provides three study programs: a) geography teaching, b) geography and landscape ecology and c) applied geology. Members of the department perform research in various areas of geography including didactics. For example, text books and other teaching materials for geography are some of the many outcomes of their didactical work.
